Technique Demonstrations
←back to MAGISTER PRODUCTS page

Applying varnish is a delicate task that takes practice to perfect. We are convinced that Magister Products are one of the simplest and most satisfactory varnishing systems out there. However, if this is your first time using an oil varnish, we strongly recommend practicing the techniques described below on some test pieces before committing to an instrument you have already invested many hours into!

We are unable to provide extensive post-sales help with the use of Magister Products. However, below you will find photographic step-by-step instructions for applying each of the products. If you still have questions after following these directions, please email us and we will post the answer on our FAQs page.

We have put together the following photographic demonstrations on using Magister Products®. We hope to add video demonstrations in the near future.

  • Step-by-Step Summary by Jason Viseltear and Bill Scott
  • Imprimatura Dorata Application
  • Mineral Selection and Preparation
  • Mineral Ground Application
  • Varnish I (first coats, adding Lacca Rubia pigments)
  • Varnish IV (antiquing)

Forthcoming Demonstrations:
  • Varnish II (alternative application techniques)
  • Varnish III (final finishes, patina discussion)
